Jessica French is a Seattle-based composer, soprano, and music educator. As a composer, she specializes in choral music, both sacred and secular. Her works have been commissioned and performed by various ensembles including Seattle Pro Musica, Northwest Girlchoir, Seattle Girls Choir, Choral Arts Northwest, Opus 7 Vocal Ensemble, Chorosynthesis, Kantorei of Kansas City, and the American Creators Chorus at the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium. Her music has been featured at venues throughout the Pacific Northwest, including Benaroya Hall, St. James Cathedral, St. Mark’s Cathedral, and Plymouth Church in Seattle, as well as at Gloucester Cathedral in the UK. Her works have been included on reading sessions at the 2015 Washington ACDA Summer Institute and at the 2019 National ACDA Conference. Jessica has a rare neurological ability called synesthesia, in which various senses are linked to one another, mainly in the form of colors associated with notes, timbres, and words. This ability lends a singularly unique voice to her writing style. Her compositions are available through The French Press, E.C. Schirmer, and MusicSpoke, and seven of her choral works have been endorsed by Project : Encore and included in their Catalog of Contemporary Choral Music. Jessica was recently named Choral Arts Northwest’s Composer-in-Residence for the 2020-21 season, and was a finalist for the American Prize in Choral Composition 2018-19 for her O Nata Lux.
As a soprano, Jessica sings with Choral Arts Northwest in Seattle, which had the honor of performing for President Obama and the First Lady at the White House in December 2015. She is a section leader for the Women's Schola at St. James Cathedral in Seattle and sings with St. James’ professional vocal ensemble, Cantorei. She has also sung on various video game and movie soundtracks.
As a music educator, Jessica currently serves as the Director of Music at St. George Catholic School in Seattle, where she teaches music to pre-k through fifth-grade students and directs the student choir that provides music for weekly masses at St. George Parish.
Jessica received her foundational training in music while attending the Madeleine Choir School in Salt Lake City, Utah. She has been interviewed by local and national media, including Northwest Focus Live on King FM, Seattle; the Salt Lake Tribune; and the National Catholic Reporter. She received a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from Yale University.
