About the Work

Eloi, Eloi was commissioned by cathedral choir member Glenda Voller, and is set to Jesus’ words on the cross, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” It was recently nominated as a semi-finalist for the American Prize in Choral Composition for 2020-2021.

Premiered on Sunday, April 14th, 2018 at the 10am Palm Sunday Mass by the St. James Cathedral Choir in Seattle. Joseph Adam, conductor.

When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?' which means, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'

They said, 'Listen, he is calling on Elijah.' But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.

[Jesu, Jesu]

'In truth this man was the Son of God.'

Text from Mark 15:33-35, 37-39, New Jerusalem Bible
